Sukiya Shinjuku Gyudon

Tokyo · Shinjuku · Gastronomy

A budget gyudon restaurant in Shinjuku; a regular beef bowl for around 400-500 ¥.

Sukiya is the largest gyudon chain in Japan, with more than 2.000 branches across the country, and in Shinjuku you will find several branches a few minutes from the station. Gyudon, literally "beef bowl", is a bowl of white rice topped with thin slices of beef and onion cooked in a sweet broth based on soy and mirin. It is the most traditional fast-food dish of the Japanese worker and here it is served in less than three minutes. The regular bowl costs around 400-450 ¥ and the special menus with miso soup and salad are around 600 ¥, which makes it one of the cheapest options in Tokyo. You can customise it by adding kimchi, melted cheese, raw egg or grated radish for small extras. The branches open 24 hours and accept both cash and card. Ideal for a quick meal between sights without spending practically anything.
