The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka is one of the most special destinations in Japan for fans of Studio Ghibli films. Designed by Hayao Miyazaki himself, the building is a work of art in itself: windows with stained-glass characters, a garden with a statue of the Laputa Robot on the rooftop, rooms with animation explained through giant zoetropes and a cinema screen with unreleased short films shown only here. Admission costs around 1.000 ¥ for adults (around 700 ¥ for children) and must be booked well in advance, as the tickets go on sale on the 10th of each month for the following month on the Lawson Ticket website. The hours are 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Tuesdays. It is reached on the Chuo Line to Mitaka station and from there by shuttle bus every 15 minutes.
