Izakaya in Nonbei Yokocho Shibuya
Small traditional bars next to Shibuya station; a drink and snacks for around 2.000-3.000 ¥.
Nonbei Yokocho, whose name literally means "alley of the drinkers", is one of the best-kept secrets of Shibuya. This alley barely two metres wide has been standing since 1952 and houses about forty small bars and izakayas that keep the nostalgic spirit of post-war Tokyo. The red lanterns, the neon signs and the wooden facades create a retro atmosphere that contrasts with the ultra-modern Shibuya that surrounds it. The bars are tiny, intimate and full of personality: there are ones for yakitori, oden, sake and craft cocktails. The prices are reasonable; a drink and something to nibble is around 500-1.000 ¥ per bar, and a whole night is between 2.000 and 3.000 ¥. Most only accept cash. It is a five-minute walk from the Hachiko exit of Shibuya, going up Miyamasuzaka. It opens from 18:00. Ideal for a quiet drink before exploring other corners of the district.
