Hachioji Castle ruins
Castle ruins in western Tokyo, surrounded by nature; free access.
The ruins of Hachioji Castle are a fascinating destination for history and hiking enthusiasts, located in the western area of Tokyo about forty minutes by train from Shinjuku. Built between 1582 and 1587 by Hojo Ujiteru, this mountain castle of the Sengoku period is considered one of the hundred best castles in Japan. Its remains —stone walls, embankments, dry moats and the Hachioji shrine at the summit— are wrapped in virgin forest, which makes the route both a historical excursion and a nature walk. The ascent from the entrance to the summit takes approximately one hour on well-marked trails. Entry is free. At the visitor centre at the entrance you will find maps, information panels and the option to request a free 60-90 minute guided tour in Japanese. It is reached by bus from Hachioji station (JR Chuo, Yokohama and Hachiko) to the Hachioji-joato Iriguchi stop. Bring water and mountain footwear.
