Tennoji Zoo
A historic zoo right in the centre of Osaka, next to Shinsekai, with more than a thousand animals of 170 species; adult admission around 500 ¥.
Tennoji Zoo is one of the oldest urban zoos in Japan, opened in 1915, and a green oasis right in the centre of Osaka, next to the Shinsekai district and the Tsutenkaku tower. In its eleven hectares live more than a thousand animals of around 170 species, including lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, polar bears and penguins, distributed in enclosures that recreate their natural habitats. It is a very inexpensive and family-friendly plan: adult admission is around 500 ¥, with free or reduced access for children. It normally opens from 9:30 to 17:00 and closes on Mondays. Its location is unbeatable, as it is easily combined with a visit to Shinsekai, the Tsutenkaku tower, Tennoji park and the Abeno Harukas viewpoint, all a few minutes' walk away. It is reached by subway to the Dobutsuen-mae (Midosuji and Sakaisuji lines) or Tennoji stations. It is a good option for a quiet morning or for travelling with children without spending much, and it is included in some of the city's tourist passes.
