Tea ceremony workshop with garden views

Nara · Nara Park · Tradition, Workshops

Tea ceremony in a traditional hall with a garden in the Nara Park area; plans from ~2.500-3.500 ¥.

The tea ceremony (chado or chadō) is one of the most authentic cultural experiences you can have in Nara. Several tea rooms in the Nara Park and Naramachi area offer introductory sessions in privileged settings: centuries-old tea houses with moss gardens, tatami and views of the temples or Mount Wakakusa. During the ceremony, an expert host guides the participant through the ritual process of preparing and tasting matcha, explaining the meaning of each gesture, the origin of the ceramics and the wabi-sabi philosophy underlying this practice. The experience includes a wagashi sweet prepared in advance to balance the bitterness of the tea. The usual price ranges between 2.500 and 3.500 ¥ per person for small groups; some luxury experiences include a kimono or access to private gardens. The usual duration is 45 to 60 minutes. Look for sessions at the Isuien Garden, the Yoshikien or specific halls in Naramachi. Most accept online bookings in advance, which is highly recommended in high season. The tea ceremony in Nara is more intimate and less crowded than the equivalents in Kyoto, which results in a more personal experience.
