A rickshaw ride is the most photogenic and relaxed way to discover Nara Park and its surroundings. The jinrikisha, or hand-pulled carriages drawn by a runner, offer rides of different durations covering the most picturesque spots of the park: the Tōdai-ji, the Kasuga Taisha, the ponds, the Nigatsudo and some corners off the usual tourist circuits. The drivers also act as guides, explaining the history of the places and stopping at the best angles to photograph the deer and the temples. The most popular rides last between 30 and 60 minutes and the approximate price for two people on the 30-minute ride is around 3.000 ¥ per person, although it varies according to the operator and the duration. The main rickshaw service in Nara Park operates near the Nandaimon gate of Tōdai-ji; you can also book one through platforms such as Klook or GetYourGuide. Ideal for travellers with reduced mobility, couples or those who want to explore the park without tiring. Booking in advance is recommended in high season (spring and autumn), as the rickshaws are very popular. Wear comfortable clothes and, if it is sunny, the rickshaw itself has a parasol.
