Kanazawa's largest covered market with 170 stalls; seafood from the Sea of Japan and local produce; free entry.
The Omicho market, nicknamed "Kanazawa's kitchen", has been in operation since the Edo period and is the largest and liveliest covered market in the city, with around 170 stalls of fishmongers, greengrocers, butchers, pickle shops and seafood restaurants. The Sea of Japan, much colder and richer in nutrients than the Pacific, supplies this market with the best snow crab (zuwaigani, in season from November to March), the famous Kanazawa prawn (noto no kuruma ebi) and the delicious buri (yellowtail) in winter. Entry to the market is free and it opens from 9:00 to 17:00 (some stalls from 7:00 or 8:00). Inside you will find several small restaurants where you can enjoy a kaisen-don (rice bowl with assorted sashimi) for 1.500-3.000 ¥ depending on the seafood chosen. It is busiest in the morning, when the locals do their daily shopping. A ten-minute walk from Kanazawa station or from Kenroku-en.
