Japanese wagashi sweets class

Kyoto · Nakagyo (centre) · Gastronomy, Workshops

Learn to make wagashi (traditional sweets) with an instructor and taste them with matcha; class from around 3.000 ¥.

Wagashi are the traditional Japanese sweets that accompany the tea ceremony, small edible works of art that change with the seasons. In this class in the centre of Kyoto, an instructor teaches you step by step to make several pieces of nerikiri (white-bean and sugar paste) moulded into the shapes of flowers such as plum, cherry or chrysanthemum according to the time of year. All the utensils and ingredients are included and, at the end, you taste your creations accompanied by a bowl of freshly whisked matcha. The experience lasts approximately one hour and starts at around 3.000 ¥. It is an activity suitable for all ages, including those with no cooking experience, and many classes are given in English. It is advisable to book the time slot in advance. It is a perfect plan to understand the tea culture of Kyoto and take home a skill and a sweet memory. Combine it with a visit to the Nishiki market or a nearby temple.
