Akechidaira Ropeway
A ropeway up to the Akechidaira viewpoint, with the best panoramic view of Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai; round trip around 1.000 ¥.
The Akechidaira Ropeway is the easiest way to reach one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Nikko. Located at the top of the winding Irohazaka road, it climbs in just a few minutes to a platform offering one of the area's most famous panoramas: Kegon Falls dropping in the distance, Lake Chuzenji and the imposing silhouette of Mount Nantai — a landscape that in autumn turns red and gold and is simply unforgettable. The round-trip ticket is around 1.000 ¥, making it one of the best view-for-money deals in Nikko. It lies on the way between the Toshogu shrine and Lake Chuzenji, so it fits perfectly into a day around the upper part of Nikko. Bear in mind that the Irohazaka road and this viewpoint get very crowded during the autumn-foliage season, so it is best to go early. Bring something warm, as it is often cool and windy at the viewpoint. It is a must-stop for landscape lovers.
